This I learned that it is essential to use these 7 Career Goals in order to succeed:

  1. Self-Assessment
  2. Networking
  3. Tracking Accomplishments
  4. Know Your Worth
  5. Update Your Skills
  6. Negotiate
  7. Allow for Downtime

Tracking accomplishments is one goal that I want to apply to my career. It will help me in the future when I begin applying for jobs. Having everything documented will save me from trying to remember things and possibly leaving things out. This goal will also help me create my portfolio. Another career goal that I want to apply is to update my skills and begin networking. For instance, updating my skills by learning new programming languages, will be beneficial when being considered for interviews. Networking will also be beneficial, as job recruitment has changed from what it used to in the past.

One educational goal is to successfully pass every class. In order to do so, it will be important to complete all my assignments on time and pay attention to the specifications. I also want to improve my time management skills, which should help with my previous goal. Time management is really important in this program, as each course consist of only 8 weeks. Another goal is to improve my skills and develop new ones that will come along with the program. Lastly, securing a summer internship is my another important goal I have set for myself. Gaining hands-on experience can help me with my career goals as well.

ETS Computer Science Test

What exactly is a ETS Major Field Test? The Major Field Test in Computer Science is a test that we will take at the end of the CST 499 course. From what I learned this week, as long as it is taken one should be okay; it will not affect one's grade. This test gives students an assessment of their strong and weak skills in computer science. After viewing the ETS page and the sample test I think I will get an average percentile. I worked on some of the problems and I was able to solve them correctly. There were a few questions that I did not fully understand, and for others, I would have to revisit old material to answer them correctly. I believe that with some review I would do good in the ETS test.

What I Learned This Week

This week, Module 4 & 5 taught the group many things about each other. Our working style was one of the things we learned and what actions the group members can take in order to balance out another team member. I also learned that we agree in many things, and we have a great team dynamic. The group also discussed what each member will contribute to the team. For instance, one member will be the conflict resolver and idea producer for discussions. Another will be the organizer responsible for tracking the schedule. I also learned what each group member is comfortable with, which is crucial for maintaining great team dynamics.

  1. Hi Victoria,

Your focus on tracking accomplishments is spot-on. Documenting everything will indeed be beneficial for job applications and portfolio creation, ensuring you don't miss any key details. Updating your skills, especially by learning new programming languages, is a smart move. It not only enhances your profile but also increases your chances during interviews. Networking is crucial in today's job landscape, and I'm glad you recognize its importance. Successfully passing every class is a solid educational goal. Managing assignments on time and paying attention to specifications will undoubtedly contribute to this. Improving time management skills is a valuable aspect, especially given the condensed 8-week course structure.

Your dedication to improving and developing new skills aligns well with the dynamic nature of the program. Securing a summer internship is an excellent goal to gain hands-on experience, contributing significantly to your career aspirations. Keep up the fantastic work, Victoria! Your goals are well-rounded and show a clear understanding of what it takes to succeed.

    Best,
    Marcelo

  2. Hello Victoria,

I agree with you that keeping track of your skills is a great way to build your portfolio. This is an important aspect when it comes time to apply for jobs. While it is important to emphasize your skills, it helps to note that experience you have with working in a group/team. This would be a great note to make on a resume or in your portfolio. Networking and internships are also just an important. The internships that you participate in can lead to more networking opportunities which can lead to more job opportunities.

It sounds like you have a great plan that is set in motion! Great job!
